I have 3 things that I have learned through my career 1) You spend a lot of time at work - make sure it's something you love and are really interested in, then you won't resent the time 2) Keep your head up to new opportunities - you don't have to be ambitious - if you do a good job AND are well connected in your business, opportunities will come to you. If you keep your head down, though, you may get overlooked 3) Don't let setbacks take over - they are learning experiences and everything will work out in the end (if you have the right attitude). Moan and about things that haven't gone your way...and they may not! Find some good sponsors in work - men tend to do this much better than women! Your sponsors don't have to be women but will be people who will keep you in mind when opportunities arise.

My Education
ACA/FCA (Other)
ICAEW
Durham, United Kingdom
Economics (Degree with Honours (BA Hons)
Durham University
Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, General studies
Rushcliffe School

I found maths A level a real wake up. I found O level very easy and then came a real cropper when it came to Mechanics....(and therefore had to retake!). However, the stats elements have been very helpful afterwards
I really liked Chemistry - what particularly amused me was that each time I moved up a level in the subject (eg from initial years to O level and then onto A level) the teachers more or less said 'yes, what you learned before.....we kind of fibbed a bit....it's a bit more complicated than that!'
I loved doing Economics - so much that I carried on to degree level. You don't have to do A level to do the degree - but you learn it much slower during A level and I think that was important for my level of understanding

More about me

I was really fortunate - an accountant came to talk to us at school when I was about 15 - and I was sold!

Nothing. I enjoyed school and I think doing what you enjoy is very important. It's helpful to keep your studies as broad as possible tho.
