I was working as part of an assembly line in a factory building circuit boards. I ensured that every board that was built was up to standard.
I went to Flight Training College in Johannesburg.
I sold mobile phones and tablets in a retail store.
I attended Oxford Aviation Academy to study.
I fly Boeing 787’s around the world, travelling to lots of cities in North and South America, Asia and Africa. As a Senior First Officer, I’ve achieved the hours and experience to become a Captain on short-haul flights but have chosen to fly long-haul. The captain and I take turns to be in charge of the flight, when I’m in charge I check the aircraft is safe to fly and do the flying including take-off and landing, the captain takes charge of the communications with air-traffic control and logs our flight progress.
My current one, it has been my dream to fly airplanes for a living since I was 15 years old.
I grew up playing team sports and would love to still but it isn’t easy with my work lifestyle. Team sports instilled a great team ethics within me which helps within my job.
I do what I can now to keep fit, water sports when I can, I go to the gym, and practice yoga when I can. Keeping fit is so good for your mental well being also.
I’m involved in a Peer Support Programme in work which I love. I like the challenge of something so different from flying, and also to be able to help out colleagues who need someone to talk to. I’ve recently become involved in another project at work aimed at encouraging more young girls to consider flying as a career.
The Airline Transport Pilots Licence (Frozen) Integrated Course, is what you will need to become an airline pilot. You can do it as I did eventually as an integrated course which means all in one go. You can also do a modular course which is doing all the different elements that pertain to the Licence as separate chunks. There are positives and negatives to doing it both ways. Research what suits you best.

I was good at maths but not good enough to do Higher Level Maths without putting in a lot of extra time. I felt Ordinary Level Maths would be sufficient. It is a great background in my job to have done maths, we still use it every day!

I loved planes and the thought of flying from the time I was a kid so decided to pursue it when I was 15 and started lessons while in school.
I would do more research about flying schools and speak to students currently attending the ones I was looking at. Flying schools have a tendency to suffer financial difficulties in downturns.
