Like most young people, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life and instead of going to University, headed out into the scary world of work at 18! Within a few years I had found my focus, and worked extremely hard, making the long term commitment to part-time study with The Open University. Six years later, I finally obtained my degree! At the age of 31, I finally found the world of IT and realized this is where I was supposed to be all along. Don't be afraid to take the path that is best for you, and not the path that everyone else wants you to take...you will find your own way, in your own way!

Building and maintaining relationships is key for co-operative and successful working, so communicating effectively is crucial. Soft skills such as empathy and emotional intelligence are also useful.
Attention to detail is an important skill when working with large amounts of data, as well as developing your analytical skills.
The ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) qualifications are extremely useful for working in an Infrastructure or Service Operations environment, especially if this is an area which is relatively new to you. This will help you to understand where you fit into the bigger picture, as well as the reasoning behind processes and frameworks.
I always wanted to be a teacher...I had a place at University to study Early Years Education with Qualified Teacher Status. I deferred for a year when I realized that I wasn't ready, and then never went at all!
I realized that I had chosen a path which didn't suit my strengths, and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. In the end I completed my degree with The Open University over a six year period, whilst working full time!!
Have more faith in myself to make the right decisions for me, rather than doing what everyone else thought I should be doing.
